MRI-guided, vacuum-assisted breast biopsy services are an adjunct to Breast MRI. Biopsy, followed by pathological analysis, is a definitive way to determine if breast cancer is present after an abnormality is detected via MRI or other imaging technique, such as mammography or ultrasound.

A breast biopsy can create feelings of anxiety due to uncertainty surrounding the procedure as well as the biopsy results. At CDI, your comfort is a primary concern.

You can have a suspicious area biopsied safely, quickly and comfortably with:
  • No advance preparation
  • No surgery or exposure to general anesthesia
  • No recovery time
  • No scarring or disfigurement of the breast

During the procedure – what to expect
  • MRI images are taken to assist the radiologist in precisely locating and mapping the area to be biopsied.
  • After the skin has been cleansed with a disinfecting soap, the radiologist will numb the area with local anesthetic using a very thin needle.
  • Next, a needle is positioned at the area requiring biopsy and the radiologist will begin the process of collecting tissue samples.
  • The entire collection process typically takes less than three minutes.
  • Several tissue samples are taken during this time to ensure the most accurate diagnosis of your suspicious area.

After the procedure – what to expect
You will not have to wait long for a diagnosis. Pathology reports are returned to your doctor within 24 to 72 hours. Once the test results have been completed and confirmed, your doctor will inform you if any further breast care follow up is required.
